(Y)Alex Yang
My parents weren't very original when it came to giving their son an English name. As such, I've adopted the nickname Y'Alex in spaces with a multitude of Alex's, derived from concatenating the first initial of my Chinese name, Yujie (宇杰), with my middle name Alex.
I am a theater and performance artist and storyteller who primarily works with the medium of lighting. In my designs, I seek to find the rules and patterns (or lack thereof) in the imagined world and ground it in the context and composition of the physical world. Lighting is a vessel through which a story is told, enhanced, embodied, and transformed. Thus, it bounds itself to the functions that the story necessitates, an abstract form that is constantly in dialogue with the art that is collaboratively being created. Each moment should be intentional and evocative. That which interests me lies beyond the text of the play, but rather in elements that are more visceral and intuitive, common to all peoples and cultures. I see my work as an interpretive dance, human impulses most deeply and directly to the movement of the human body; I seek to design in the same way. I recently graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in Theatre, with minors in Chemistry and Theatrical Design.
